Ubuntu (/ʊˈbʊnt/ (About this soundlisten))[6] is a free and open-source[7][8] Linux distribution based on Debian.[9] Ubuntu is officially released in three editions: Desktop,[10] Server,[11] and Core[12] (for IoT[13] devices and robots[14][15]). Ubuntu is a popular operating system for cloud computing, with support for OpenStack.[16]

Ubuntu is released every six months, with long-term support (LTS) releases every two years.[6][17][18] The latest release is 18.10 ("Cosmic Cuttlefish"), and the most recent long-term support release is 18.04 LTS ("Bionic Beaver"), which is supported until 2028.[19][20]

Ubuntu is developed by Canonical[21] and the community under a meritocratic governance model.[6][22] Canonical provides security updates and support for each Ubuntu release, starting from the release date and until the release reaches its designated end-of-life (EOL) date.[6][23][24] Canonical generates revenue through the sale of premium services related to Ubuntu.[25][26]

Ubuntu is named after the African philosophy of ubuntu, which Canonical translates as "humanity to others" or "I am what I am because of who we all are".[6]
